Before you start

Two texts every practitioner needs

The bio says who you are, and the statement explains what you make and why. Each has its own job.

Artist Statement

An artist statement explains what you make, how you make it, and why.

Used for
Residencies, grants, portfolio

Written in the present tense, it covers your medium, the questions that drive your practice and your references. Residency and grant panels and curators read it alongside your work, and it is often the first thing they receive from you.

1

It speaks when you are not there

On the gallery wall, in the catalogue and in an application, it explains your work when you cannot.

2

It clarifies your practice for you first

Writing it makes you name what you do, and many practitioners find their real subject while writing it.

3

It opens doors

Residencies, grants and most open calls ask for one, usually within a word limit.

Our method

We start with you. The writing comes after.

Before any writing, the tool asks reflective questions: what repels you, what draws you in, where you were born and what you carried from there, and what you would be as a metaphor. The questions build on the Heartline workshop method in Paris and on years of training practitioners at Haddad Studio.

The more honest and detailed your answers, the closer the text comes to you. The answers give you something before the text, too: you see the words you repeat, the subject that returns in your work without you planning it, and you meet your practice in your own language before the art world's.

What you receive

Everything is built from your answers.

  • A bilingual bio

In Arabic and English, third person, ready to copy.

  • A bilingual statement

First person in three paragraphs, with a short version for Instagram.

  • Your words and terms

Keywords from your own language, and international art terms close to your practice, each with a line on how it relates to your work.

  • Gaps in your file

Contradictions and missing details in your answers, each with the question that resolves it.

  • Opportunities for your goal

Residencies, grants and open calls, filtered by your goal (production, research, exhibiting or travel), field, stage and eligibility.

  • Your next step

A Haddad Studio workshop or service that fits what your text revealed, with the reason why.

We can nominate you

Haddad Studio receives opportunities and nomination requests from institutions and curators. At the end of the tool you can agree to be nominated for what fits your file, and we contact you before sending your file anywhere.

Questions

Is the tool free?

Yes. The questions, texts, terms and opportunities are completely free. Only the personal review session is paid, and it is optional.

Do I need exhibitions or an art degree?

No. Every question has a path for those early in their career, and the tool builds on your actual projects and practice without adding anything you did not say.

Who writes the text?

AI drafts the text from your answers following Haddad Studio's method. The draft is a starting point: read it, change what does not sound like you. The final word is yours.

What happens to my answers?

They are saved so we can build your results and you can return to them. We share your file with no one without your consent, and we contact you before any nomination.

Which language should I answer in?

Arabic or English, informally if that comes more naturally. Your texts come out in both languages either way.
